Summer in the City 2014

This is gonna get very rambly and very long, just so you know before you read any further. So much happened this year and I want to try and fit it all into one blog post so I'll try and condense it as much as I can but can't guarantee it.

So, my second year attending and volunteering at the event and it beat last year by a mile!

Friday was Creator Day which we attended and learnt some stuff. The highlight of that day for me was definitely the 'Working With Brands' panel which included PJ, Tyler Oakley, Jamie from Sorted. Food and other people who worked for brands or agencies. It was both entertaining (how could it not be with Tyler on the panel) and informative.
We also managed to chat with Hazel Hayes on that day as well as a few other creators. It was basically the expo hall plus panels throughout the day so we spent majority of our time trying out Google Glass (weird at first but when you get used to focusing on the little screen, it is so so cool!) and playing Playstation and XBox games.

Saturday was our first day of volunteering and as much as there was a schedule I don't think anyone really stuck to it. I queued for the Dan & Phil meet and greet but then ended up helping out taking photos for people anyway. It got to the point where Dan would look to me even when I wasn't taking the photo, that's how many I took. They were super nice and it was fab to interact with them as much as I did. Cue photos from that.

After their meetup had finished we walked back to the green room with them carrying their presents for them (they had 5 bags full!) I got Dan to feel how heavy my bag was and when I went to take it back he was like "I can take it, don't worry" so that was lovely of him. We said goodbye to them, I awkwardly tapped him on the arm as I did so because I'm the biggest loser going and then we headed back to the meet and greet area. From then we helped with Alfie and Marcus' meetup and once they had finished managed to grab a photo with them. Marcus remembered tweeting me too which made my day a little bit.

Joe and Zoe then came round the corner and we stood chatting to Joe for a bit. He was so so nice and easy to talk to. He was there to collect his 1 Million Subscribers award from YouTube and explained that he always has his camera and lights facing his bed and people who come over wonder what he does so now they'll know. He was also more than happy to take selfies with us and was joking that we had the best job. Yes Joe, yes we did.

We also got selfies with Zoe and Tyler who was on his way back from his meet and greet but they're not the best so you can imagine them inserted here:

We hung around Emma Blackery and Luke Cutforth's meetup while also watching the Youtube Awards being given from the side of the stage. After theirs had finished we hung around with Luke for a while and got selfies with him while he tried and failed to balance on a penny board.

Later on we sat infront of the stage to watch Dan & Phil doing their thing before walking out with them, saying goodbye (with hugs cos they're cuuuuute) we also said goodbye to PJ who we'd seen earlier that day too!

Sunday was just as full on but this time we spent most of the day working on panels. We started off in Charlie's screening of his new film 'Strangers In A Bed' starring the one and only Jack Howard. We got everyone in and seated and then stayed for a while before having to head to the other panel room to work on the longform youtube and mental health panels, both very interesting.

Then we got a bit of a break and I decided to go sit round the back of meet and greets to eat my chips. Mr Sugg happened to be there again so I asked if I could join him as there was no one else there that I knew. He was more than happy though we did end up sitting in silence on our phones which was sooo much fun. I then went back to the panel room and helped out with Louise's Glittertime Q&A running around with a microphone for people to ask questions and after that we walked her back to the greenroom.
We had one more panel to work on before we had free reign again so we decided to go help out with Joe and Caspar's meet and greet, which was so chill and we helped a 13 year old who was panicking a bit in the queue because she was so excited and got her sitting over to the side while she waited for her turn. She was literally crying with happiness and every time Joe looked over at us she put her hand over her mouth and started crying again. We made sure she had the best experience meeting him and when she was done she hugged us all and it was the best feeling!
After their meet and greet they had to head off straight away so we said our goodbyes and Joe thanked us for everything we did which was lovely.

After all of that had happened we went to stand backstage with a bunch of youtubers and other volunteers to watch Jack and Dean and then it was the thank you's from the amazing organisers and then it was basically a huge hug fest backstage. Youtubers, organisers, volunteers just hugging and being pushed into hugs and it was great and ace and the perfect ending to the best weekend.

Thank you to Liam, Tom, Luke and Jazza who trusted 91 of us enough to basically keep everything ticking over nicely and for the opportunity to feel part of something and interact with some of my favourite people. I can't wait for next year!

And that's about it. Sorry it's rambly, I did warn you! :)
